Wme Hit By Covid Outbreak As Case Counts Rise In Los Angeles

LA City Council To Vote On Sweeping COVID Vaccine Mandate Wednesday

Even as some studios, networks and agencies contemplate a return to the office, others are seeing Covid outbreaks among employees as cases surge across Los Angeles.

The latest is a cluster of 18 infections at WME, as reported today on the Los Angeles County Public Health Department dashboard. The agencys outbreak is the second largest of those currently listed by the county, behind only the 20 cases reported by the Chik-fil-A near Magic Mountain.

    The WME cases were not on the list on May 12 the last time Deadline checked it so they would have been tallied by health officials in the last two weeks. Deadline reached out to WME and will add any comment we receive.

    WME employees returned to the office months ago. Deadline reported that the agencys plans for a return included everyone being vaccinated and wearing masks in compliance with L.A. Countys indoor mask mandate. That mandate was lifted March 3.

    Warner Bros., which had some employees return today on a hybrid schedule, saw a cluster of three cases, which is the lowest number that require reporting by the county. It had a total of 10 cases in two clusters in that mid-May report.

    Also in mid-May, Lionsgate had a cluster of 21 cases after a number of staffers tested positive after returning home from CinemaCon. That was after it recorded six cases in late April.

    Returning To Work After Getting Sick Or Exposed To Covid

    Employers must ensure workers meet the criteria in the ETS before they return to work.

    Workers that have COVID-19 symptoms

    If a worker has symptoms, they cannot return to work until all of these are true:

    • At least 10 days have passed since their symptoms began
    • Their fever has been gone for 24 hours without the aid of medication
    • Their symptoms have improved

    This applies whether they are vaccinated or not. A negative test is not required to return to work.

    Workers that do not have COVID-19 symptoms, but test positive

    If a worker does not have symptoms, but tests positive, they cannot return to work for at least 10 days after they first tested positive. This applies whether they are vaccinated or not. A negative test is not required to return to work.

    Workers that do not have COVID-19 symptoms, but had close contact

    A worker who had close contact with someone who has COVID-19 can continue to go to work if all of these are true:

    • They have either:
    • Recovered from COVID-19 in the last 90 days
  • They do not have symptoms
  • They did not test positive
  • If a worker does not have symptoms, had close contact, and is not vaccinated, when they may return to work depends:

    • If they test negative after Day 5 from the last date of exposure, they may return to work after Day 7
    • If they do not get tested, they cannot return to work for at least 10 days since their last exposure to COVID-19

    Another bummer coronavirus summer for California? With cases on the rise, the state finds itself in a familiar, if frustrating, position.

    Los Angeles County will no longer require people to wear masks at indoor public places as long as they can show proof of vaccination, county officials said on Wednesday, as the number of new coronavirus cases continued to plunge.

    The order, which is set to take effect on Friday, will allow customers to skip wearing masks if they provide proof of vaccination or a negative test taken in the previous two days, the county, which is home to 10 million people, said in a news release.

    As the county continues to experience reduced Covid-19 spread, it is appropriate to consider fewer required safety measures, county officials said in a statement, adding that vulnerable individuals should continue to layer in all protections possible.

    Back in October, when it seemed like California had the coronavirus under control, a group of researchers at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation made a devastating prediction.

    According to their computer models, even if 95% of U.S. residents donned masks each time they left the house, at least 100,000 more Americans would die of COVID-19 by the end of February. In nine states, the death rate would climb high enough to necessitate another lockdown by December.

    The Targeted Safer at Home Order aligns with the latest health order from the LA County Department of Public Health. The City and County will continue to monitor public health data and guidance, and conform our policies accordingly with the safety of our residents foremost in our minds.

    If public health conditions change, it may become necessary to step backward periodically and for the City to amend this Order to be more restrictive.

    The price of gas is inextricably linked to the cost of crude oil, from which it’s refined from. Every $10 increase in the cost of a barrel of crude adds almost a quarter to the price of a gallon at the pump.

    What Eviction Protections Are Still In Place

    Before addressing eviction limits, its worth noting a couple of things. The lease agreement you signed obligates you to pay rent every month. Regardless of any restrictions placed on evictions, you still owe that rent. The landlord, in turn, has a duty to provide you a habitable place to live and cannot harass you or neglect your unit because you have COVID-related unpaid rent.

    Now as for eviction protections, your situation will depend on where you live and why you fell behind on your rent.

    The city of Los Angeles continues to ban evictions for nonpayment of rent for anyone who has suffered a financial hardship due to COVID-19. According to the city, that would include those who have lost jobs or hours, had to pay more for child care or faced higher medical bills because of the pandemic.

    The citys ban will stay in effect until the local COVID emergency period has ended, the Los Angeles Housing Department says on its website. Nor may landlords conduct no fault evictions or oust tenants to take units off the rental market while the emergency is in place.

    Once the emergency period ends, renters in L.A. who miss more rent payments can be evicted for failure to pay the rent during post-emergency months. But they cannot be evicted in the near term for failing to pay the rent they owed during the emergency period instead, the city ordinance gives them 12 months after the emergency ends to pay that debt.
