Americans 60 and older should get a second booster of Pfizer or Moderna’s mRNA vaccine, according to Dr. Ashish K. Jha, the White House’s COVID-19 response coordinator.

Jha, who was appointed by President Joe Biden in March, said April 17 on Fox News Sunday that there is “pretty compelling” evidence from Israeli studies that a fourth shot notably reduced the chance of infection, serious illness and deaths among those 60 and up.

The US Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention signed off on a second COVID booster shot for Americans 50 and older on March 29, as well as for individuals with compromised immune systems.

A federal mandate requiring large companies to vaccinate employees is now being withdrawn.

The Biden administration is withdrawing its COVID-19 vaccine mandate for companies with 100 or more employees, the Department of Labor said Tuesday . This follows the Supreme Court’s decision earlier this month to block the requirement. It would’ve required employees to get fully vaccinated or provide negative COVID-19 test results weekly.

The federal vaccine requirement was designed to curb the surge in coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and deaths seen in recent months, including those caused by the delta variant and the omicron variant spreading across the country.

Unvaccinated people are 10 times more likely to be hospitalized and 11 times more likely to die from the coronavirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Breakthrough COVID-19 cases, which occur when vaccinated people contract the disease, are far less deadly but can still produce long-term effects, including “long COVID.”

Will We Keep Needing More Boosters

The nature of this pandemic is unprecedented, Topol said, in part because of the speed at which scientists have been able to develop vaccines and treatments. So it’s hard to look into the future and know if regular boosters will be required, either to prevent infection or stave off hospitalization or death.

“We need more tools,” Topol told CNET. “We need a pan-coronavirus vaccine,” that can deter multiple viruses, not just SARS-CoV-2.

“If we had that we wouldn’t have to futz around with each letter” variant, he added. “If we had Paxlovid in large quantities available everywhere, we wouldn’t need repeated boosters,” he said, referring to the COVID antiviral pill.

A. Through their respective clinical trials, Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna have indicated their vaccines are approximately 95% effective. The pediatric Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was found to be almost 91% effective in clinical trials. The J& J vaccine was found to be more than 74% effective.

Information gathered through clinical trials becomes public in the course of the EUA submission. Once the EUA is submitted, these documents become accessible by the public through the FDA.

Vaccine Requirements & Exemptions

An employer may require that their employees be vaccinated. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has established that employersâincluding healthcare providers when acting solely in their role as employersâmay ask an employee about vaccination status without violating the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act external icon. There may be exceptions to this an employee health clinic may, for instance, become an entity covered by HIPAA if engaged in certain transactions. Additional vaccine boosters are available at pharmacies, health care clinics and doctor’s offices, much as previous shots were:

  • Walgreens is now offering additional Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccine boosters to eligible customers on a walk-in basis.
  • CVS has an online appointment portal to schedule your second booster. Eligible individuals can also walk in for their shots, including at on-site CVS pharmacy locations at Target, subject to local demand.
  • Grocery chain Albertsons is also offering second-round boosters to walk-ins or scheduled appointments at more than 1,700 Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market, Haggen and Carrs locations.

Many Americans cannot wait to get the COVID-19 vaccine. They call hotline numbers. They search online for vaccine clinics. They wait for hours in line. Yet, others with ready access to the vaccine have declined it in large numbers. Staff in long-term care facilities were prioritized to receive the vaccine, but many are choosing not to get vaccinated. Why?

Nobody is more familiar with the impact of COVID-19 than staff at nursing homes and assisted living facilities that have been ground zero for the pandemic. Large numbers of residents and staff have contracted the virus. Nearly 40% of the COVID deaths in the US have occurred among residents of these facilities. Over 1,500 nursing home staff have also died from COVID, making nursing home caregiver the most dangerous job in America.

The Federal Government Allows Private Companies To Require Vaccinations

Even before Biden announced the COVID-19 vaccine mandate, federal law allowed US employers to require employees to be vaccinated during pandemics. The administration’s new rule could give employers the option of making unvaccinated employees pay for the weekly testing, Bloomberg Law reported. At the same time, because the order is federally mandated, the Department of Labor can require employers to give workers paid time off to get vaccinated and paid sick leave to recover from any side effects.

Can Employers Demand Vaccination

While employers can make vaccines necessary in their policies, whether those requirements would hold up if challenged is another matter, says Hermie Abraham, an employment lawyer and the owner of Advocation Professional Corporation.

Because the federal and provincial governments have so far refrained from making the COVID-19 vaccine mandatory, its unlikely that workplace policies that do so will stand if tested in court or through arbitration, Abraham says.

Requiring a medical procedure such as a vaccine could be considered a breach of privacy or a human rights violation, says Lior Samfiru, partner at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP.

A legal kerfuffle between Torontos St. Michaels Hospital and the Ontario Nurses Association is a recent legal precedent for whether employers can mandate vaccinations, both Abraham and Samfiru say.

In 2018, an arbitrator struck down a policy by St. Michaels to force nurses who had not received the flu vaccine to wear surgical masks following a grievance filed by the ONA.

Arbitrator William Kaplan called the policy unsustainable and illogical given poor evidence that surgical masks prevent transmission of the flu and that the hospital did not require unvaccinated visitors to mask up, among other reasons.

Gop Lawmakers Looking To Repeal The Covid

March 07, 2022 – The Senate has approved a resolution that seeks to repeal the COVID-19 healthcare worker vaccine mandate. The House of Representatives has not made such a vote, meaning as of now the vaccine mandate stands.

Sen. Roger Marshall sponsored the resolution, which he first introduced in December 2021 under the Congressional Review Act.

Senators voted 49-44 to approve the GOP measure, with no Democrats voting to eliminate the mandate. Six Democratic senators missed the vote, allowing GOP senators to prevail in an evenly divided Senate.

Despite this resistance, the Supreme Court ruled in January 2022 that all facilities participating in Medicare and Medicaid must enforce the healthcare worker vaccine mandate and have their workers fully vaccinated by March 15.

In a press release, Sen. Marshall called the vaccine mandate a slap in the face to the hard-working men and women who never took a day off on the frontline fight against COVID-19. He also claimed that the mandate was not about public health or science and instead was a move from President Biden to control every aspect of our lives.

Today is a huge victory for all the healthcare workers who ran to the sound of the COVID battle as Senate Republicans joined forces taking us one step closer to invalidating President Bidens overreaching and harmful CMS vaccine mandate, Marshall said. These workers are the true heroes of the pandemic and deserve our best fight and utmost respect.
