New ‘Delta Plus’ Coronavirus Variant Detected in Bay Area

Covid-19 vaccines, which are based on the original Wuhan strain of the virus, also protect against severe disease via the more recent variants. The government continues to urge those who have not yet had their first, second or booster dose to come forward for vaccination.

The UK is currently offering spring boosters to people aged 75 and over and those who are immunosuppressed as a precautionary measure around six months on from the initial booster. 75,000 have already booked their fourth dose since the service opened yesterday morning.

While restrictions are lifted and freedoms restored in many countries, there has been a general feeling that the pandemic is over, or that Covid is just something that we live with now.

However, the surge in Deltacron and Stealth Omicron serve as an important reminder that new variants can still continue to emerge, even two years after the first Covid-19 cases.

What Are Omicron Symptoms Are They Different In Any Way

All of the variants, including delta and omicron, cause similar COVID-19 symptoms, including cough, fever and fatigue. There is some evidence that fewer people with omicron lose their taste and smell. Omicron is also less likely to cause severe disease such as pneumonia that may require treatment in the hospital.

In fully vaccinated and/or boosted people, omicron symptoms tend to be mild. In unvaccinated people, symptoms may be quite severe, possibly leading to hospitalization or even death.

Omicron is also more likely to cause symptoms even if you’ve been exposed or tested positive in the past.

The Delta Variant And Vaccines

Breakthrough cases, when a fully vaccinated person becomes ill with COVID-19, are fairly rare. But Pollock noted none of the vaccines are 100% effective. When the Pfizer and the Moderna vaccines were administered in the population, they were about 93% effective, he said. Which meant that for every 100 people you vaccinate, seven of them on average would end with a breakthrough case. Vaccine makers have said their vaccines have held up well against the Delta variant.

If infection does occur after a person is fully vaccinated, the illness shouldnt be severe. If you got a full series of vaccinations, youre very unlikely to be hospitalized or to die, Pollock said. In fact, many of these breakthrough infections may be asymptomatic, and the person may never know that they were infected.

What isnt known is how easily vaccinated people can transmit the virus. We have some ideas, that if you get infected after youve been vaccinated, you probably have lower amounts of virus that youre going to shed, Pollock said. But unfortunately, we dont have the population evidence yet that says with absolute certainty theres no way you could transmit this to somebody else.

Pollock pointed out that could become a problem in households with mixed vaccination status. If youre a breakthrough case and all your relatives at home arent vaccinated, theoretically you could infect them. Thats not good.

How Worried Should We Be

Experts have been quick to stress that recombinant variants are not uncommon, and that Deltacron is not the first and will not be the last to occur for Covid.

This happens whenever we are in the switchover period from one dominant variant to another, and is usually a scientific curiosity but not much more than that, says Dr Jeffrey Barrett, who formerly led the Covid-19 genomics initiative at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.

With only a small number of cases of Deltacron so far identified, however, there is not yet enough data about the severity of the variant or how well vaccines protect against it.

Soumya Swaminathan, the chief scientist at the World Health Organization, tweeted on Tuesday: We have known that recombinant events can occur, in humans or animals, with multiple circulating variants of #SarsCoV2. Need to wait for experiments to determine the properties of this virus. Importance of sequencing, analytics and rapid data sharing as we deal with this pandemic.

Young agrees. We need to keep an eye on the behaviour of this recombinant in terms of its transmissibility and its ability to escape vaccine-induced immune protection, he says. This also serves to reinforce the need to maintain genetic surveillance. As the virus continues to circulate, particularly in under-vaccinated populations and in people whose vaccine-induced immunity is decaying, we are very likely to see more variants including those generated through recombination.

BA.2, the omicron sub-variant, now accounts for nearly 35% of all COVID-19 variants in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

The agency’s data shows BA.1.1 makes up 57.3%.

B.1.1.529, or the original omicron, accounts for 7.9%.

BA.2 has been classified as a “variant of concern” by the CDC and the World Health Organization .

The CDC previously estimated that BA.2 made up 22.3% of circulating variants in the country for the week ending on March 12.

WHO officials have warned that studies on BA.2 have shown it has a growth advantage over BA.1 and “appears inherently more transmissible.”

Studies are being conducted to evaluate the risk of reinfection with BA.2 compared with BA.1. Reinfection with BA.2 following infection with BA.1 has been documented, though initial data suggests infection with BA.1 provides strong protection against reinfection with BA.2 for a limited period.

The WHO says it will continue to closely monitor BA.2., including whether it causes more severe disease.

BA.2, which has a lot of mutations can appear like a delta infection because it lacks a genetic quirk of the original omicron variant.

Vaccines appear to be just as effective against the sub-variant, according to early research.

Is The Delta Variant More Dangerous Than Previous Variants

Itâs difficult to compare the severity of the Delta variant to previous strains of the virus. This is because many of the people who are most at risk from COVID-19 are now vaccinated, including older people and those with underlying health conditions, so most of the new infections are in younger people who are generally healthier.

Concerningly, early research suggests that people who catch the Delta variant are more likely to require hospitalisation than those infected with the Alpha variant. But, as Wendy explains, this data doesnât tell the whole story.

âAlthough weâre seeing more people going to the hospital if they catch the Delta variant, at the moment there isn’t any evidence that their outcome, once theyâre in the hospital, is worse. In fact, there’s evidence that fewer of the people in hospital need extra oxygen or end up in intensive care compared with previous waves,â she says.

Is The Omicron Variant Able To Spread More Easily Than Other Covid

According to the CDC, omicron likely spreads more easily than the original COVID-19 virus. It appears to be much more contagious compared to the delta variant, as it quickly became the dominant strain in the U.S. The CDC said it expects that people can spread omicron even if theyre vaccinated or dont have symptoms.

Are Vaccines Working Against The Delta Variant

âWe can see from the data that is coming from Public Health England and Public Health Scotland that the vaccines all still working really well for Delta in protecting people from severe disease,â Wendy says.

However, due to changes in the virus spike protein which render the protective antibodies generated from vaccination less effective, vaccines do not offer full protection from catching a COVID-19 infection or mild disease.

âPeople can still get infected with Delta if they’ve had a vaccine and particularly if theyâve only had a single dose of vaccine, where protection drops to around 50%,â she warns.

Although the vaccines offer good protection against severe disease from the Delta variant, we also donât know whether they will prevent long COVID, potentially condemning thousands of people to lingering health problems in the future.

How Is Omicron Different From Previous Variants

There are two key differences between omicron and previous variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that emerged in late 2019. Early data suggests that omicron cases are milder than infections caused by the delta variant. On the flip side, omicron is far more transmissible meaning it spreads easier than previous variants. It can be confusing to think about the overall effects of a milder virus that is also far more infectious.

When the delta variant became dominant and displaced alpha in the summer of 2021, it managed to do so because it was between 40% and 60% more transmissible. Now, the omicron variant is even more transmissible than delta.

Its difficult to put numbers around how intrinsically more transmissible one variant is than another, because human behaviors and vaccination percentages are constantly in flux. Those factors, together with transmissibility, affect how a virus fares in a population.

In comparison with the original strain of SARS-CoV-2, omicron contains 72 mutations throughout its genome. Some of these mutations account for the complex new features that characterize this variant. Half of those changes are in the spike protein, the critical surface protein that enables the virus to latch on and infect cells. It is also the key virus feature that is recognized by the human immune system.

Vaccination Is The Best Protection Against Delta

The most important thing you can do to protect yourself from Delta is to get fully vaccinated, the doctors say. The CDC endorses a clinical preference for vaccination with the Pfizer and Moderna shots, both of which are two-dose vaccines. You must get both of those shots and then wait the recommended two-week period for them to take full effect. All adults are eligible to be vaccinated . Boosters are also recommended.

Although fully vaccinated people with a breakthrough infection can infect others, the CDC reports that the amount of viral genetic material may decrease faster in vaccinated peopleso, while they have been found to carry the same amount of virus in their noses and throats as unvaccinated people, studies have also found they may spread virus for a shorter time.

There are additional CDC prevention guidelines available for both vaccinated and unvaccinated people. As efforts continue to vaccinate more people in the U.S., the CDC is recommending layered prevention strategies for everyone, and that includes wearing face masks in public indoor settings in areas of substantial or high transmission. The agency has also recommended universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools. There also may be mask mandates in place depending on your geographic location.

How Did The Delta Variant Come About

When a virus is circulating widely and causing numerous infections, the likelihood of the virus mutating increases. The more opportunities a virus has to spread, the more opportunities it has to undergo changes.

Experts are constantly monitoring new variants of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 to see if they spread more easily, cause more severe disease, or could have an impact on the effectiveness of public health measures or vaccines.

The best way we can limit the transmission of COVID-19 is for people to get the vaccine when available to them and continue to follow existing advice on preventing the spread of the virus, including physical distancing, wearing masks, regular handwashing and keeping indoor areas well ventilated.

Indeed, as the Deltacron hybrids found in the US/UK appear to be different from those found in mainland Europe, its possible that this has happened multiple times separately.

It currently remains unclear if any of the UK cases of Deltacron have been found in Scotland.

Scotland has seen a recent resurgence of Covid cases thanks to the BA.2 variant, which is also known as stealth Omicron.

Where Has It Been Detected

So far, samples of Deltacron have been identified mostly in Europe.

As of Wednesday, there have been 36 samples of Deltacron reported in France, eight in Denmark and one each in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, according to GISAID.

An unpublished report by the genetic sequencing company Helix identified two Deltacron cases in the US, as Reuters first reported.

Dr Nguyen said he was also working to confirm potential Deltacron cases in the US, separate to what has already been reported. He added that while he doesnt expect Deltacron to fuel a new wave of infections, its important to monitor and track these developments.

Not only is it scientifically interesting to learn about these recombinants, but it also provides us clues about how the virus is changing over the course of the pandemic, he said.

Difference Between Stealth Omicron And Delta Omicron

The Stealth Omicron variant has originated from the Omicron variant of Covid-19 and is expected to be highly transmissible like its predecessor. One major difference between the previous variants of Covid-19 and stealth Omicron is that it is harder to detect in PCR tests.

Though not much is known about the new Covid-19 variant, it is expected that it will be more transmissible than Omicron, which was the most transmissible Covid-19 variant yet. Since its harder to detect, experts are speculating that this might lead to the next wave of the pandemic.

According to the World Health Organisation , the stealth Omicron variant attacks the upper respiratory tract. This makes it different from Delta, as the latter attacks the lungs and the Omicron variant has little to no effect on the respiratory system.

Scientists and experts are concerned that the stealth Omicron variant can bring about the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, and since its harder to detect, it might spread faster and with more intensity from the previous variants.

Further, it is expected that a stealth Omicron infection is bound to make your immunity stronger, as compared to Delta and Omicron infections.

Experts have determined that the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic is expected to reach its peak in June or July, and is likely to stay till the end of October.
