Heres A New Way To Do Study Abroad During The Covid

Study finds people taking fewer steps during coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic

With the US and much of the world engulfed in the COVID-19 pandemic, travel restrictions and health risks have threatened to make study abroad difficult, if not impossible.

But that doesnt mean students wont still want to learn about other cultures and see how people in other parts of the world approach different issues, such as climate change, income inequality or human rights.

Ideally, students would learn about these things in different cultural contexts by actually going to other countries. But since travel abroad to certain countries is off-limits or discouraged due to COVID-19, the question now becomes: How can study abroad still be done?

As a longtime proponent of international education, one solution I see and one that more and more universities are beginning to pursue is to have students study abroad online.

American University, Arcadia University Northeastern University and the University of Buffalo are already advancingvirtual study abroad. Their programmes range from online courses at a US universitys international branch campus to courses offered in partnership with foreign universities.

New York, New Jersey and California failed in their handling of the COVID-19 pandemic because of stringent lockdowns and policies, while Florida was among the best-performing states in the country, a new study has found.

The study, published by the Committee To Unleash Prosperity, graded states by comparing COVID-19 outcomes based on the number of deaths, the economy and impact on education.

Overall, the bottom 10 on the studys report card were dominated by states that had the most severe pandemic lockdowns and were among the last to finally reopen schools.

Shutting down their economies and schools was by far the biggest mistake governors and state officials made during COVID, particularly in blue states, Stephen Moore, one of the studys authors and co-founder of the Committee To Unleash Prosperity, said Monday.

Despite now-disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo initially being hailed for his strict response to the pandemic, the Empire State performed poorly on every measure ranking 49th overall, according to the study.

New Jersey was the worst-performing state, the study found. Other places that also received an F grade included California, Illinois and Washington, DC.

They had high age-adjusted death rates, they had high unemployment and significant GDP losses, and they kept their schools shut down much longer than almost all other states, the study said.

Utah, Nebraska, Vermont and Florida all governed by Republicans topped the list.

Comparisons With Other Studies

The severe psychological distress prevalence rate was 55.2% among Bangladeshi university students engaged in online learning. Although this may appear daunting, such experiences are quite common. A recent study conducted at Texas A& M University, USA, found that 71% of students reported higher stress and anxiety during COVID-19 . Similarly, the prevalence of anxiety and stress was 32.9% and 14.6%, respectively, in medical school graduates in China . Perceived stress among University of Nizwa students in Oman reported that 82.5% were experiencing medium stress, while 14.4% experienced raised stress during COVID-19 e-learning . A sample of 420 primary and secondary school students in Palestine showed that 35.7% experienced moderate to severe stress levels . University students are primarily acknowledged as a vulnerable population therefore, the radical shift in education affects students regardless of their socio-economic status. A cross-national study conducted among university students in nine countries discovered that high stress, depression, and anxiety prevalence was 61.30%, 40.3%, and 30%, respectively . The prevalence of depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and perceived stress was reportedly higher among university students in the humanities field in Italy, where 87.7% reported moderate or severe stress .

Risks For Womens Longevity

For the study, the researchers analyzed data from the National Center for Health Statistics. They looked specifically at maternal mortality from before the pandemic and then during the pandemic, from April 2020 to December 2020.

Ultimately, the team observed significant increases in maternal mortality during the pandemic. The maternal death rate increased by nearly 35%, while late maternal deaths increased by more than 40% during the pandemic.

The researchers explained that the COVID-19 virus itself was responsible for nearly 15% of these maternal deaths. Additionally, women with diabetes or cardiovascular concerns two conditions that worsened COVID-related symptoms were at a higher risk of maternal death.

Its also important to note that Black and Hispanic women were at a much higher risk of maternal death than white women. The maternal death rate spiked by nearly 75% in Hispanic women and by 40% in non-Hispanic Black women.

For the first time in more than a decade, the maternal mortality rate for Hispanic women during the pandemic was higher than that for non-Hispanic white women, a shift that may be related to COVID and deserves greater attention moving forward, said researcher Eugene Declercq.

Moving forward, the researchers plan to do more work in this area to better understand the effect that COVID has on womens health and longevity.

Factors That Impact Students’ Academic And Social Concerns During Online Education

The success of online classes depends on many factors. Empirical research univocally highlighted the critical role of faculty in shaping students’ experience in online classes. For instance, Adnan and Anwar , based on a study among 126 undergraduates and postgraduate college students in different HEIs in Pakistan, found that students’ academic performance is affected due to lack of face-to-face interaction with the instructors and delays in responding to students’ inquiries. Bates and Khasawneh stated that frequent feedback from teachers improved students’ academic performance and increased their motivation and engagement during online learning. Students learned more when their lecturers provided training on using the online learning system at the beginning of the course. In addition, Zhou et al. have found that most teachers in China are unfamiliar with synchronous and asynchronous online teaching tools and could not guide their students on using online platforms/or learning management systems. Hence, it is imperative that faculty knowledge, experience, and interaction during online classes significantly influence students’ experiences in online classes.

Findings from a research study exploring the mental health of Dublin’s general hospital staff during the COVID-19 pandemic reveal significant impacts on doctors, nurses and radiographers, including high levels of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder , depression and suicidal thinking.

The COWORKER Study, developed to investigate the mental health impact of the pandemic on Dublin general hospital staff and help inform appropriate responses, involved researchers from Trinity, St Patrick’s Mental Health Services and RCSI University of Medicine and Health Services. It was led by Declan McLoughlin, Research Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity and Consultant Psychiatrist at St Patrick’s Mental Health Services.

Staff in three large Dublin general hospitals were invited to participate, with the study also aiming to provide an opportunity for doctors, nurses and radiographers to recognize if they have been experiencing mental health difficulties during the pandemic and to seek support if required.

Among the key findings, which came from a cross-sectional anonymous survey of 377 Dublin health care staff during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2021, are:

  • 45% of respondents reported moderate or severe symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder
  • 52% of respondents reported low mood
  • 13% of respondents reported thinking of ending their life over the previous week and 5% reported planning to end their life

Expert nurses felt they were unable to perform their job properly, which one described as a feeling of not being a good nurse anymore. Study to examine social mediaâs effects on stress during COVID

The states that locked down their economies have had unemployment rates on average about two percentage points higher than states that did not engage in severe lockdowns, the researchers added.

These high state unemployment rates have persisted for two years now. Most lockdown states have still not fully recovered the jobs lost in the early months of COVID.

New York ranked 33rd for the least impact to education and second-to-last for its economic performance. California was ranked 50th for its education disruptions and 40th for the economy.

Comparatively, Florida was third for the least impact to education and 13th in economic performance.

The study was authored by University of Chicago economist Casey Mulligan, Stephen Moore of the Heritage Foundation and Phil Kerpen from the Committee to Unleash Prosperity.

The report card results were also published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Implications Of This Study

A significant number of students worldwide encountered similar psychological distress throughout this pandemic. Unlike American and European countries, Bangladesh follows a tradition of classroom-centered redundant pedagogy. Different adaptive or non-adaptive strategies, such as active behavioral coping, have shown positive outcomes when used by students.

The current study findings emphasize the importance of coping skills and the crucial need for mental health education programs to be integrated into the university curriculum. Students task-oriented coping strategies are an indication of their problem-solving abilities. Most institutions teach major disciplines and rely on their students to learn good decision-making skills and tenacity along the route. However, in recent months, students around the world have faced challenges for which they were unprepared. Online Exams During Covid

Online or digital exams can save lecturers ample marking time. It also saves students the hassle of putting pen to paper to demonstrate their knowledge in an area of study.

According to the University of Technology Sydney, students are also less anxious about online exams as they can first do practice tests online. This assessment model also explores the possibility of automated marking for standardised tests.

Besides lightening the workload of faculty members, online exams could also save institutions a lot of money.

A report by ZDNet pointed out that Monash University in Australia would save approximately AU$7 million per annum by shifting 80 percent of exams online, which it aims to do this year.

The university issues 360,000 exams, the equivalent to 8.5 million sheets of A4 paper or 1,000 trees.

Research, education and business intelligence delivery leader Cliff Ashford said that getting people to mark essay exams is expensive and highly ineffective as it requires extensive manual data entry, while tracking analytics is non-existent. This also means exams are exposed to human error.
