What Do I Do When Results Are Returned

    How Common Are False Positives And False Negatives

    The PCR test for COVID-19 works by detecting genetic material from SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The genetic material from SARS-CoV-2 cannot be confused with the genetic material from other viruses, so the COVID-19 diagnostic test is highly specific. This means it almost never gives a false positive. If you are tested for COVID-19, and the test comes back positive, you can be very sure that you are infected with this virus.

    False negative results can occur. If a specimen collection is not done properly, or if you are in an early stage of infection or already partially recovered, your swab sample might not contain enough viral material to come back positive. If you have any symptoms of COVID-19, it is safest to assume you are infected and act accordingly, even if your diagnostic test comes back negative.

    How Do I Get My Test Results

    The healthcare provider who took your sample will call you back with your test results. The Utah Department of Health is not able to give you test results. If you havent received your tests results, contact the healthcare provider where you were tested.

    The health department will only call you if you test positive for COVID-19. When the health department calls you, they will ask you about who you have been in close contact with since you got sick. This helps them to know who may also need to be tested for COVID-19.

    How Contact Tracing Works

    • A person has COVID-19 symptoms, takes the;online self-assessment;to book a test and then tests positive.
    • Public Health staff interview the positive person to identify public areas they have visited and people theyâve spent time with. These people are contacts. Public Health maintains the privacy of the positive person. Anyone who tests positive can choose to tell others about their diagnosis, but Public Health will not. ;

    What Are The Types Of Covid

    There are three types of tests related to COVID-19.

    PCR test: A PCR test tells you if you have COVID-19 right now and could spread it to other people. A PCR test looks for the genetic material of the virus. It is a very accurate test and almost always detects if a person is infected with the virus. PCR tests are processed in a lab and the results can take a few days to get back. PCR tests are usually done by:

An antigen test is like a PCR test, where a sample is collected with a nasal or nasopharyngeal swab, but you are able to get the results much quicker. Results take about 15 minutes.

    Antigen tests can detect only high amounts of virus and are less sensitive than PCR tests. They work best when someone has symptoms of COVID-19. Antigen tests are most accurate during the first 5-7 days of your illness when your viral load is highest.

    Testing Program Fizzled In Spring

    A rapid testing program announced by Premier Jason Kenney and Education Minister Adriana LaGrange on April 10;during the third wave also fell far short of its goals.

    LaGrange and Kenney said they were sending 440,000 kits to schools in Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge and Grande Prairie;to screen up to 200,000 students and 20,000 staff. These kits were also part of the federal supply.
