Which Covid Vaccine Is Cvs Using

What Is The Federal Pharmacy Program And How Does It Work

What happens when COVID vaccine providers don’t use all their doses?

On February 2, 2021, the CDC announced the next phase of the vaccination program the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. As part of this program, CVS Health is receiving vaccine allocations supply from the federal government and is now vaccinating eligible populations in 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

Who Qualifies For An Additional Dose

On August 12, the FDA authorized an additional vaccine dose for certain immunocompromised individuals as part of its Emergency Use Authorization amendment. The amendment applies to the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for patients 12 years and older and the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for patients 18 years and older. Due to insufficient data, the EUA amendment for an additional dose does not apply to the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine or to individuals who received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine as a primary series. The CDC and FDA are actively engaged to ensure that immunocompromised individuals who received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine have optimal vaccine protection and we expect to hear more guidance in the near future.

Cvs Opens Up More Than 100 New Stores For Covid Vaccine Appointments In Nj

CVS Pharmacy. Local pharmacies will offer the COVID-19 vaccine. Wednesday, February 3, 2021Patti Sapone | NJ Advance Media

added more than 100 more New Jersey locations where residents can sign up for a COVID vaccine appointment on Friday, according to a spokeswoman

Select CVS Pharmacy locations in the 17 states in which CVS Pharmacy is already administering vaccines as part of the Federal Pharmacy Program received the Janssen vaccine this past week, spokeswoman Tara Burke said. Scheduling for the Janssen vaccine, which requires only one dose, began on today and shots will be administered beginning tomorrow.

She did not say how many Johnson & Johnson doses New Jersey is receiving.

People who sign up will be given an appointment for either the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine, depending on availability, she said. Each store will only have one type of vaccine, she said.

To sign up for an appointment, you can go to or you can use the CVS Pharmacy app, the company said.

The company also has a customer service line at 746-7287 for those without internet access.

No walk-in vaccines will be provided, it said.

When you go to the website, you will see a map that highlights the different states where vaccines are available. When you select New Jersey, you can page down in the pop-up box to see a complete list of the locations.

How Are Pharmacies Preparing To Administer Covid

The federal government is working with 21 national pharmacy partners and independent pharmacy networks to get shots into arms. Some retail pharmacy chains post We have a limited supply! or Schedule your COVID-19 vaccination today notices front and center on their websites. Others make vaccine information harder to find. Many are discouraging phone calls to local pharmacies asking to schedule vaccine appointments at this time. Heres a look at what some retail pharmacy and grocery chains are doing.

CVS Pharmacy

As part of the federal program, CVS pharmacy is administering the COVID-19 vaccine in about half the states and Puerto Rico to high-priority groups ahead of a broader rollout. The company is offering targeted vaccination clinics for eligible groups in select stores in:

  • Alabama
  • Philadelphia
  • New York City

Rite Aid advises customers to be patient when checking their eligibility and trying to make appointments. Appointments are updated daily. For the most updated Rite Aid vaccine information, go here.

Hy-Vee has offered the vaccine to frontline healthcare workers and plans to roll it out at its 270 pharmacy locations across 8 Midwestern states when available and appropriate. Hy-Vee will offer vaccines in the following states:

  • Illinois
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin

Kroger also lists about 13 other states as coming soon or urges visitors to check back for updates. For the most updated Kroger vaccine information, go here

Can Patients Choose Which Covid

CVS to offer sweepstakes for COVID vaccine recipients as ...

At this time, our select CVS Pharmacy locations that are currently offering the COVID-19 vaccine to eligible populations have either the Moderna, Pfizer or Janssen vaccine – not more than one type at this time. Patients will be able to see which CVS Pharmacy location has which vaccine and appointment availability on before scheduling. Depending on which vaccine you receive, you will be prompted to schedule a second dose if needed.

What Do I Need To Do/know About The Johnson & Johnson Covid

The FDA and the CDC are confident that the vaccine is safe and effective at preventing COVID-19. At this time, the available data suggests that the chance of developing a rare blood disorder  thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome  is very low, and the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks.

For women between the ages of 18 and 49, this adverse event is rare, occurring at a rate of about 7 per 1 million vaccinated women. For women 50 years and older and men of all ages, this adverse event is even more rare.  Women younger than 50 should be aware that other COVID-19 vaccines are available where this risk has not been seen.

Patients who receive the Janssen vaccine should monitor for severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain or shortness of breath for 2 weeks after administration.

If experiencing symptoms, patients should contact their healthcare provider.

Cvs Walgreens Have Wasted More Covid Vaccine Doses Than Most States Combined

Two national pharmacy chains that the federal government entrusted to inoculate people against Covid-19 account for the lion’s share of wasted vaccine doses, according to government data obtained by Kaiser Health News.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded 182,874 wasted doses as of late March, three months into the country’s effort to vaccinate the masses against the coronavirus. CVS was responsible for nearly half, and Walgreens was responsible for 21 percent, or nearly 128,500 wasted shots combined.

CDC data suggest that the companies have wasted more doses than states, U.S. territories and federal agencies combined. Pfizer’s vaccine, which in December was the first to be deployed and initially required storage at ultracold temperatures, made up nearly 60 percent of the tossed doses.

Full coverage of the coronavirus outbreak

It’s not completely clear from the CDC data why the two chains wasted so much more vaccine than states and federal agencies. Some critics have pointed to poor planning early in the rollout, when the Trump administration leaned heavily on CVS and Walgreens to vaccinate residents and staff members of long-term care facilities. In response to questions, CVS said “nearly all” of its reported vaccine waste occurred during that effort. Walgreens didn’t specify how many doses were wasted during the long-term care program.

Is Parental Consent Required For Patients Ages 12

Yes, a parent or legal guardian must complete the online registration on for minors seeking the COVID-19 vaccine. An adult must accompany children ages 12 â 15 to the appointment at CVS Pharmacy, but does not need to accompany teens ages 16 and older, unless required by local or state law.

Community Pharmacy Enhanced Service Network, or CPESN USA, is participating in the federal program and offering vaccines at locations in Florida and Iowa

Amerisource said it was placing orders with the CDC on behalf of its Good Neighbor Pharmacy and Elevate Provider Network a cooperative of 4,500 independently owned pharmacies in Kentucky, Kansas, Nebraska, Texas and Guam.

Initially, Amerisource is allocating more than 10,000 doses a week to more than 100 independent community pharmacies.

In California’s San Joaquin County, the Save Mart Company’s Lucky Pharmacy is offering appointments here.

What Kind Of Side Effects Should People Expect From The Covid

According to the CDC, you may have some side effects following the COVID-19 vaccine, which are normal signs that your body is building protection. Common side effects include pain and swelling on the arm where you got the shot, and fever, chills, tiredness and headache throughout the rest of your body.

Cvs Adding 74 More Covid

A woman receives the vaccine at a CVS Pharmacy location

AUSTIN CVS Health will start giving the COVID-19 vaccine at 74 additional stores in Texas, the pharmacy giant announced Thursday. CVS was already offering vaccinations at 106 stores, so this will mean 180 locations total.

Bookings at these new pharmacy locations will be available starting Saturday.

This comes as Texas prepares to open vaccines up to Group 1C on Monday, which includes anyone 50 or older. Texas also recently opened up the vaccine to all teachers, school staff and child care providers.

CVS does not get its vaccine from the Texas Department of State Health Services. Instead, it gets it directly from the federal government as part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. CVS is vaccinating people at nearly 1,200 pharmacies in 29 states and Puerto Rico.

Can My 12 To 15 Year Old Child Receive The Covid

Yes, all children ages 12 to 15 are eligible to receive the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine at CVS Pharmacy, as of Thursday, May 13, provided there is parental or legal guardian consent and the child is accompanied by an adult.

Because the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine is currently the only authorized vaccine for children in this age group, we recommend making an appointment online at or through the CVS Pharmacy app at a nearby location that has the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine to ensure there is adequate supply and availability. Walk-ins are also accepted. Our online scheduling tool will only display appointments at locations that have the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine once the patients age is provided.

What Is The Role Of Cvs Health In Administering Covid

Getting a COVID

During Q2, CVS Health administered more than 6 million COVID-19 tests and nearly 17 million COVID-19 vaccines nationwide in the second quarter, bringing the total number to 29 million COVID-19 tests and 30 million COVID-19 vaccines. The Company maintains a strong commitment to vaccine and testing equity and continues to optimize site locations and targeted outreach initiatives in order to reach vulnerable populations.

What Does The Cdc Recommend For People Who Have Been Fully Vaccinated

On May 13, the CDC updated its guidance for fully vaccinated people including new guidance that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in any setting, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance. Read the full guidance.

Where Do We Stand With Covid

Pfizer-BioNTech received emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration for its vaccine on December 11, 2020, and another vaccine from Moderna got approval a week later. Pfizer-BioNTechs vaccine is approved for use in people age 16 and older. Modernas vaccine can be given to people age 18 and older.

A third COVID-19 vaccine, a single-dose vaccine from Johnson & Johnson , received emergency-use FDA approval on February 27, 2021. It can be given to people age 18 years and older.

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores has said its pharmacies can deliver 100 million vaccinations in 30 days when supply is available.

Who Is Administering The Vaccines Pharmacists Pharmacy Technicians Other Health Care Providers

Cvs Announces 74 More Stores Will Begin To Offer Covid

Publix, CVS to book COVID-19 vaccine appointments on Wednesday

DALLAS CVS Health will soon offer COVID-19 vaccinations at 74 additional stores throughout Texas, the company announced Thursday.

These locations add to the 106 stores that are already administering vaccines. This brings to the total number of CVS Pharmacy locations administering vaccines to 180 in Texas.

The company said it will begin to administer vaccines to eligible people as early as Sunday, March 14. In a news release, CVS said appointments for the latest allocation of doses will become available for booking Saturday, March 13.

Phase 1A and 1B are currently underway in Texas. Last week, President Joe Biden and the federal government expanded eligibility to educators and workers at schools and child care facilities.

RELATED: Phase 1C will start March 15, allowing Texans 50 and above to get vaccinated

On Wednesday, officials with the state health department announced Phase 1C will expand vaccine eligibility to Texans who are 50 and above beginning March 15.

People must register prior to receiving their vaccine at or using the CVS Pharmacy app. Those who don’t have internet access can call the CVS Customer Service line at 800-746-7287.

CVS said walk-ins are not allowed.

The company said the list of specific stores offering the vaccine will be available online as stores receive shipments and appointments become available.

The 180 vaccination sites in Texas are among nearly 1,2000 locations throughout the country administering shots.

Are People Who Received The Johnson & Johnson Covid

The Food and Drug Administration recently added Guillain-Barré syndrome as a warning to the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 fact sheets for health care providers and patients. According to the fact sheets, reports of adverse events following use of the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine under emergency use authorization suggest an increased risk of GBS during the 42 days following vaccination. Although regulators have found the chances of developing the condition are low, they appear to be three to five time higher among recipients of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine than among the general population in the United States.

What About People Who Aren’t Immunocompromised

The pharmacy chains say they aren’t offering booster shots to people who aren’t immunocompromised, but plan to be ready once federal regulators give the green light, which is expected in mid- to late-September.

“We will continue to follow guidance from the FDA and CDC to administer vaccines to eligible populations and feel confident we have the pharmacy expertise, infrastructure and local community presence to accelerate access to these vaccinations,” Walgreens said in its statement.

Who Can Get An Additional Shot Right Now

Only people who are severely to moderately immunocompromised.

According to the CDC, that includes people who are currently being treated for cancer; have received an organ transplant or are taking immune suppression medications; received a stem cell transplant in the last two years; have a severe primary immunodeficiency; have advanced or untreated HIV infections; or are taking high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that suppress the immune system.

I Can’t Find My Covid

Ocean City Nursing Home Offers COVID Vaccines To Residents ...

After receiving your first dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, you should receive a CDC vaccination card that tells you what COVID-19 vaccine you received, the date you received it and where you received it.

How to store your COVID-19 vaccine info:Here’s how to store your COVID-19 vaccination card on your smartphone

If you didn’t receive the vaccine card or lost it, your first step is to contact your vaccination provider, such as Rite Aid, CVS or a local government office. If you can’t contact your provider, you can reach out to contact your state health departments immunization information system. All vaccination providers must report COVID-19 vaccinations to their IIS.

If you call the CDC directly, it will not have individual information about COVID-19 vaccinations.

There are also opt-in services such as v-safe or VaxText that save your vaccination information. So if you misplace your card and need to show proof, you can access the applications.

Is vaccination proof legal?:Yes, and businesses can require proof

How To Register For A Vaccine At Cvs

You can register for a CVS vaccine here. The direct vaccine scheduler page is here, but youll need to go through the COVID-19 webpage first to find out if theres availability in your city. You can also register through the CVS Pharmacy app. Registration will be available for both the first and second dose, but will only be available according to your states priority guidelines.

CVS Vaccine Scheduler will first take you through a screener and then ask if you are needing a first or second dose. Youll then be asked to select a location where youd like to be vaccinated. After choosing your state, youll be asked your age and if youre in a priority group, and then youll be asked to share which priority group you are in.

If you arent in a priority group, youll get the following message depending on your state: You dont qualify for the COVID-19 vaccine at this time. This may be due to you having a lower level of exposure, or vulnerability, to the coronavirus. You may become eligible later once the vaccine is available to a larger segment of the population.

CVS has noted that the vaccine is only available by appointment and there are no walk-ins available.

Why Are Only Patients Who Are Immunocompromised Eligible For An Additional Dose At This Time

According to the CDC, studies show that some people who are immunocompromised dont build adequate levels of protection after receiving their 2-dose initial mRNA COVID-19 vaccination. With the Delta variant surging and cases of COVID-19 increasing significantly across the United States, an additional dose could help prevent serious and possibly life-threatening COVID-19 infection in immunocompromised people.

When Will We Get Back To Normal Or Near

The pandemic in the U.S. appears to be a mixed picture. Deaths from COVID-19 have surpassed 539,000. Case rates are still high at about 60,000 new cases a day. But theyre leveling off in some areas and rising in others, causing concern about a possible resurgence of hotspots similar to what Europe has been experiencing.

Vaccination rates are accelerating after a slow, frustrating rollout and recent winter storms delayed vaccine shipments around the country. More than of all Americans are fully vaccinated, including of people 65 and older. Public health officials urge people to continue to wear face masks and practice social distancing as the population works toward herd immunity

In many places, people in high-priority groups such as older adults struggle to find open vaccine appointments. Here are some tips and tricks for nabbing a chance at a shot.

Cautious optimism has more governors easing restrictions and some lifting mask mandates meant to curb the virus. Californias theme parks and attractions are reopening at limited capacity.

At the same time, scientists are warning about COVID-19 variants that are more easily spread from person to person and threaten to undo recent gains against the virus. Some manufacturers are working on vaccine booster shots to combat the new strains of the virus.

President Biden said that conditions can change and variants may make things worse again, but he set a goal of July 4 for returning to semi-normal.

Other Cvs Employees Could Be Included In The Mandate On A Later Date

WOONSOCKET, RI CVS Health will require some employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19, a company spokesperson said Monday.

The Woonsocket-based pharmacy chain said all corporate employees and patient-facing workers, such as nurses, must be fully vaccinated by Oct. 31. Pharmacists working in retail store have until Nov. 30 to get the vaccine. A company spokesperson said other employees could be included in the mandate at a later date.

“From the start of the pandemic, our decision-making process has been driven by health, safety and science,” said CVS CEO Karen Lynch said in a statement. “While the vast majority of our employees have chosen to be vaccinated, this decision is in direct response to the dramatic rise in cases among the unvaccinated.”

What We Are Still Learning

  • How well the vaccines protect people with weakened immune systems, including people who take medicines that suppress the immune system
  • How long COVID-19 vaccines protect people
  • How many people have to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before the population can be considered protected
  • How effective the vaccines are against new variants of the virus that causes COVID-19

Cdc Numbers Don’t Include Many States

The federal government collects information about vaccine waste through federal systems called VTrckS, which manages ordering and shipments, and Tiberius, a platform run by the Department of Health and Human Services that monitors distribution. VTrckS can exchange data with state and local immunization registries that track who has received shots, but some states rely on manual data entry, Hannan said.

The 15 states not included in the CDC’s data are Alaska, California, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas. The District of Columbia is also missing.

Of those jurisdictions, 11 provided data to KHN: Alaska, Colorado, Kansas, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Texas and the District of Columbia.

Most of those reported minimal waste to KHN: Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and the District of Columbia together registered just 1,090 wasted doses.

In others, the numbers are more significant. On March 19, the Maryland Health Department said it knew of 3,175 wasted doses.

Texas had the most wasted doses of any state in either the CDC’s data or the data states provided to KHN. Its records showed 9,229 wasted doses as of March 26, third overall behind CVS and Walgreens.

Fowlie, the CDC spokesperson, said the agency is “working closely” with states that have technical issues to ensure accurate reporting.

Is Minuteclinic Offering The Covid

CVS to offer three over

Beginning June 18, customers and patients 18 years of age and older will also be able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at select MinuteClinic locations in 14 states and Washington, DC. These new locations are in addition to the more than 9,600 CVS Pharmacy locations that are offering the vaccine across all 50 states.

How Can I Book A Third Shot

Many of the pharmacies say eligible people can either book an appointment online or simply walk in for their third shot.

A Walgreens spokesperson said that same-day appointments are available on a walk-in basis at some of its locations for eligible people. CVS is also offering walk-in appointments Hy-Vee said people can either walk in or schedule an appointment, while Jewel-Osco also is accepting either walk-ins or scheduled appointments.

Walmart Sam’s Club And Rite Aid

More than 1,000 Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies in 22 states are getting federal vaccine allocations, with the shots slated to be given starting on February 12. That includes Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.

The retail giant is also giving vaccinations using state allocation in 11 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

“Ninety percent of the country lives within 10 miles of a Walmart. We’re at the heart of many rural and underserved communities, and we are committed to providing access to vaccines as groups become eligible,” Dr. Cheryl Pegus, Walmart’s executive vice president, Health & Wellness, said Tuesday in a news release

The Rite Aid chain, which operates 2,450 stores in 18 states, has limited information on registering for a vaccination here
