Joshua and Alexandra Price told CNN they took their kids to a Walgreens in Evansville on Oct. 4 for their yearly shots, but the pharmacist later called to inform the couple that the entire family had been jabbed with adult doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

When they called us and told us that they had made a mistake and had given us the wrong shot, I was just in shock. All I could say to them was, What does this mean for my kids?’ Alexandra told the network.

Lukas started feeling sick before we even got home from Walgreens, she added, referring to their 4-year-old boy, whose sister is named Sophia. He was feeling yucky, lethargic and already had begun a fever, her husband told CNN.

Cvs Walgreens Have Wasted More Covid Vaccine Doses Than Most States Combined

Two national pharmacy chains that the federal government entrusted to inoculate people against Covid-19 account for the lion’s share of wasted vaccine doses, according to government data obtained by Kaiser Health News.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded 182,874 wasted doses as of late March, three months into the country’s effort to vaccinate the masses against the coronavirus. CVS was responsible for nearly half, and Walgreens was responsible for 21 percent, or nearly 128,500 wasted shots combined.

CDC data suggest that the companies have wasted more doses than states, U.S. territories and federal agencies combined. Pfizer’s vaccine, which in December was the first to be deployed and initially required storage at ultracold temperatures, made up nearly 60 percent of the tossed doses.

It’s not completely clear from the CDC data why the two chains wasted so much more vaccine than states and federal agencies. Some critics have pointed to poor planning early in the rollout, when the Trump administration leaned heavily on CVS and Walgreens to vaccinate residents and staff members of long-term care facilities. In response to questions, CVS said “nearly all” of its reported vaccine waste occurred during that effort. Walgreens didn’t specify how many doses were wasted during the long-term care program.

Walgreens Deviates From Cdc Guidelines For Administering Covid Vaccine

    The Latest: China says COVID

Using the vaccine developed by Pfizer and Germanys BioNTechWalgreens has inoculated hundreds of thousands of Americans against Covid-19 this year. But the pharmacy chain has not been following guidance from federal health officials concerning the timing of second doses.

The guidelines require two doses, three weeks apart. Walgreens, however, separated them by four weeks because it was faster and simpler for the company to schedule appointments.

There is no evidence that separating the doses by an extra week decreases the vaccines effectiveness. Even though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a three-week gap, the agency says it is acceptable to separate the doses by up to six weeks if necessary.

Walgreenss decision, however, was never announced publicly and caused confusion for some customers. It also caught the attention of federal health officials. This decision was never announced publicly. Kate Grusich, a spokeswoman for the C.D.C., said the agency asked Walgreens to stop using a longer-than-recommended period between doses.

Walgreens Administered Covid Vaccines Wrong Now Its Trying To Follow The Rules

Walgreens has come under fire for incorrectly administering second doses of the Pfizer COVID vaccine.

According to a report from The New York Times, the pharmacy and drug store retailer has been giving patients the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine four weeks after the first because it was easier to schedule at the same interval as the Moderna vaccine.

The second dose of the Pfizer COVID vaccine needs to be provided in a three-week interval, while the second dose of the Moderna COVID shot is administered at a four-week interval.

Dr. Kevin Ban, Walgreens’ chief medical officer, told The Times that administering the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine in the fourth week was the easiest way to stand up the process based on our capabilities at the time.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has acknowledged the error, requesting that Walgreens administer the vaccine doses correctly, the Times reported. However, the CDC does say in a guideline on its website that, in some instances, it is acceptable to extend a second dose of the Pfizer vaccine up to six weeks if necessary.

Kate Grusich, a CDC spokeswoman, told USA Today in an email, For individuals who received the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, CDC continues to recommend getting the second shot three weeks after the first shot, and to stick as close as possible to that recommended three-week interval.

Cdc Gave Recommendation Of Third Dose To Vulnerable Americans

ORLANDO, Fla. Appointments to receive a third shot of the COVID-19 vaccine for those who are immunocompromised are now available at CVS and Walgreens pharmacies.

The new vaccination opportunities come as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending an extra dose of the vaccine to vulnerable Americans following the Food and Drug Administrations authorization.

Walgreens announced on Friday it would begin offering walk-in vaccinations for the extra dose. The company said patient should bring their vaccination record to appointments and will be required to attest to their eligibility. The third dose should be the same vaccine as received by the patient previously and administered at least four weeks after completing the second dose, according to Walgreens.

CVS pharmacies also have vaccination appointments for immunocompromised individuals who are eligible to receive a third dose of the vaccine.

According to the CDC, here is who is eligible to get the extra shot:

    • Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
    • Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
    • Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
    • Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency
    • Advanced or untreated HIV infection
    • Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response

Particularly early on, officials didn’t adequately assess where there would be demand and set up sites in response, Lee said â which is especially important when trying to jab as many people as quickly as possible.

“If you think of any business, they’re going to determine where the customers are first,” he said. “It’s not just a matter of loading up vaccine and going to a place.”

KHN’s survey of vaccine waste is based on public records requests to the CDC and all 50 states, five major cities, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Combined, the records document more than 200,000 wasted doses. However, the data have clear shortcomings. Data from 15 states, the District of Columbia and multiple U.S. territories aren’t included in the CDC’s records. And, in general, waste reporting has been inconsistent.

In addition to the CDC, 33 states and the District of Columbia provided at least some data to KHN in response to the records requests. They reported that at least 18,675 additional doses have been wasted across 10 jurisdictions not represented in the CDC figures. They include 9,229 doses wasted in Texas as of March 26 and 2,384 in New Hampshire as of March 10.

Eight more states told KHN about more wasted doses than they reported to the CDC.

“To me, this ultimately correlates with just poor planning,” said a critic of the corporate effort, Dr. Michael Wasserman, immediate past president of the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine.
