New Study Shows 3 Doses Of COVID Vaccine Most Effective

Everyone ages 16 and older in the U.S. is eligible to get a COVID-19 booster shot, depending on which vaccine you received initially and when you got it.

More specifically, booster shots should be given to people 18 and older. This is broader guidance than what was originally recommended by the CDC.

At this time, booster shots arent authorized for people age 15 or younger. But remember: Two doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine are authorized for children as young as 5 years old.

What Coronavirus Vaccines Are Available Now

The vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson are so far the only products available to Americans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines over the J& J vaccine single-shot version because a rare but serious blood clotting disorder has been linked to it. But J& Js vaccine is still available for people who are unable or unwilling to receive an mRNA vaccine, the CDC said in a statement issued Dec. 16.

Pfizers vaccine is approved for people 16 and older and is available for people ages 5-15 under emergency use authorization Moderna and J& J’s vaccines have been authorized for people 18 and older.

The three vaccines have been found to be effective at preventing COVID-19, including severe illness from an infection. Unvaccinated individuals are nearly 6 times more likely to test positive for COVID-19 than vaccinated people, and they’re 14 times more likely to die from the disease, the latest federal data show.

Cdc Report Finds That Covid

A recent CDC report analyzing data from December 2020 to August 2021 found that full vaccination was about 80% effective at preventing COVID-19 infection among frontline workers.

This percentage, however, takes into account both Alpha and Delta variants, rather than addressing the Delta variant specifically. Before the Delta variants predominance, this percentage was closer to 91%. After it became predominant in the summer months, the number from this study dropped to about 66%. Today, the Delta variant represents almost 99% of U.S. COVID-19 cases.

However, this study doesnt represent everyone it only comes from about 3,000 vaccinated frontline workers across eight different U.S. locations. The report also cautioned that these findings might be impacted by how long ago some completed their vaccination series, since general vaccine effectiveness may go down over time.

  • What this means: Preliminary data says that COVID-19 vaccines may provide less protection against the Delta variant compared to previous strains of the virus, but theyre still considered effective.

  • What this doesnt mean: COVID-19 vaccines arent effective against the Delta variant. COVID-19 vaccines, in addition to other precautions, remain the best defense against COVID-19.

COVID-19 vaccines have proven to be safe, effective and life-saving. Like all vaccines, they do not fully protect everyone who is vaccinated, and we do not yet know how well they can prevent people from transmitting the virus to others. So as well as getting vaccinated, we must also continue with other measures to fight the pandemic.

Vaccine Pause Showed Systems Strength

The CDC and FDA acted quickly and issued a joint statement recommending the pause, Dr. Fryhofer said during a recent AMA COVID-19 Update episode about the J& J Janssen COVID-19 vaccine pause. The CDC also released additional information through its Health Alert Network, which could lead to more cases being reported as a result of increased awareness.

Additionally, the CDC warned that in these cases, heparin, a standard therapy for blood clots, could cause tremendous harm, Dr. Fryhofer added, noting that the CDC advises checking for platelet activating antibodies by doing a platelet factor four antibody test.

The CDC advises against heparin therapy if platelet factor four antibody test is positive, she said. If PL4 test is positive, use of non-heparin anticoagulants and high dose intravenous immune globulin should be considered. Hematology consultation is also advised.

After a thorough review, ACIP lifted the J& J Janssen vaccine pause April 23.

AMA President Susan R. Bailey, MD, commended ACIP for reaffirming its recommendation on the use of the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine for those 18 or older under the FDAs emergency use authorization. The population-level data presented during ACIPs meeting clearly demonstrates that the benefits of this approach outweigh the risks, she said.

Changing To A Different Vaccine

If you want your booster shot to be different from your original vaccine, that would also make sense.

If you received a J& J shot originally, current evidence suggests that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine booster shots may provide more protection than a J& J vaccine booster.

And even though the risk of rare blood clots is small with the J& J vaccine, its still possible. Because of this, the CDC recommends changing to Pfizer or Moderna for your booster.

If you originally got the Pfizer vaccine, switching to the Moderna vaccine has been shown to result in a good immune response. The same goes for switching to Pfizer if you originally got Moderna. But at least right now, there isnt a clear advantage to making a switch.

Astrazeneca Mrna Vaccines Equally Effective Against Covid

AstraZenecas Covid-19 vaccine and mRNA Covid-19 vaccines, the worlds most-used vaccines, provide equivalent protection against hospitalization and death from Covid-19 following two doses, a new expert review of data from 79 real-world studies reveals.

The newly reviewed data showed that both the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is one of the available viral vector vaccines, and mRNA Covid-19 vaccines, offer equivalent protection against hospitalization and death regardless of age, with no statistical difference. While data available at the time of review relates to the Delta and earlier variants, emerging statistics indicate similar findings on serious Covid-19 outcomes resulting from Omicron.

Professor Guy Thwaites, Director of the Oxford Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam, said: Covid-19 vaccines have been critical to saving lives and helping Southeast Asia countries return to some normalcy over the past year. Our expert review shows that the AstraZeneca and available mRNA vaccines provide similar, high-level protection against life-threatening Covid-19. This is important information for the regions policy makers as they consider the optimal deployment of Covid-19 vaccines in their populations over the next 12 months.

Which Covid-19 vaccine is most effective?

A recent CDC study compared COVID-19 test results in hospitalized people with COVID-19-like symptoms. They found that unvaccinated people who were previously infected with the virus were over 5 times more likely to test positive for COVID-19. This was compared to fully vaccinated people who received the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines.

This study included data from over 7,000 adults in the U.S. from January to September 2021. People included in the study were hospitalized with COVID-19-like symptoms. They either tested positive or became fully vaccinated 3 to 6 months before being hospitalized.

People who received the J& J vaccine were not included in the study because of a lack of data.

  • What this means: Its recommended to get vaccinated against COVID-19 even if youve tested positive for the illness in the past.

  • What this doesnt mean: The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines should be preferred over the J& J vaccine. The J& J vaccine wasnt included in this study because of a lack of available data.

Can Covid Vaccines Shed Or Transmit Infection

Disturbingly, it appears the COVID-19 vaccines may also cause trouble for those who decide not to get the shots but spend time in close proximity to people who did. While it cannot be viral shedding, as none of the vaccines use live or even attenuated virus, there appears to be some sort of spike protein transmission going on.

While the spike protein cannot replicate or multiply like a virus, it is toxic in and of itself. In her paper, Seneff details how the spike protein acts as a metabolic poison, capable of triggering pathological damage leading to lung damage and heart and brain diseases:

In a series of papers, Yuichiro Suzuki in collaboration with other authors presented a strong argument that the spike protein by itself can cause a signaling response in the vasculature with potentially widespread consequences.

These authors observed that, in severe cases of COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 causes significant morphological changes to the pulmonary vasculature Furthermore, they showed that exposure of cultured human pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein S1 subunit was sufficient to promote cell signaling without the rest of the virus components.

Follow-up papers showed that the spike protein S1 subunit suppresses ACE2, causing a condition resembling pulmonary arterial hypertension , a severe lung disease with very high mortality

How Mrna Can Alter Your Dna

In her paper, Seneff also describes how mRNA can, in fact, alter your DNA, essentially integrating the instructions to make spike proteins into your genome. Typically, mRNA cannot be integrated directly into your genes because you need reverse transcriptase.

Reverse transcriptase converts RNA back into DNA . However, theres a wide variety of reverse transcriptase systems already embedded in our DNA, which makes this possible. This is an area that Mikovits has studied for decades, so, commenting on Seneffs findings, she says:

When you activate latent and defective viruses, you turn on reverse transcriptase you turn on the virome. But you also need an integrase gene. So how are retroviruses silenced? DNA methylation. you throw in a lot of GC-rich regions youve got that synthetic viral particle now youve woken up your herpes viruses.

are silenced DNA methylation, but as our soil is depleted in minerals, we have people with methylation defects. This is why I said the first people who are going to die are people with inflammatory conditions and cancer.

Moderna Vaccine Vs Omicron

There are not any studies that offer definitive estimates for the Moderna vaccines effectiveness against Omicron, though scientists believe it may be similar to Pfizer-BioNTechs vaccine.

A preliminary study of blood samples from 30 people who had received two doses of the Moderna vaccine showed that their antibodies were at least about 50 times less effective at neutralizing Omicron.

With a 50-microgram booster, however, antibodies increased 37-fold. On the other hand, a 100-microgram booster, the amount given to immunocompromised people as a third primary shot, increased antibody levels more than 80 times.

There is not yet enough data to give estimates for effectiveness. However, a booster has been shown to increase antibody levels significantly.

Safety For Those Who Are Pregnant Lactating Or Planning A Pregnancy

Good News in COVID

Early on in the Covid vaccine rollout, there were no data on which to determine if the vaccines were safe for people who are pregnant or lactating. But after several studies, experts have concluded the vaccines are safe during pregnancy and lactationand furthermore, they are important for these two groups to receive. This study in the New England Journal of Medicine, for instance, looked at the safety of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in pregnant and lactating people.

The CDC and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advise that people who are pregnant or lactating should get vaccinated, because of the risk Covid infection poses to them.

There are a lot of rumors making the rounds that getting vaccinated against Covid will negatively impact a persons ability to conceive a child. ESPN football reporter Allison Williams recently announced she was quitting the network which has a vaccine mandate because she wants to have another child.

You Have Other Vaccine Choices

The FDA updated the J& J Janssen vaccine EUA with an additional warning, noting that women under 50 should be made aware of a rare risk of blood clots and low platelets following vaccination, said Dr. Fryhofer. They also need to know there are other COVID vaccines out there that dont pose this small risk.

That empowers patient choice. It also means vaccination clinics should make clear which vaccine or vaccines are being offered and when, she added.

With the J& J Janssen vaccine, the benefits of the one-dose regimen far outweigh the risks. But, if people are worried, they can access Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. There have been more than 180 million doses of mRNA vaccines by Pfizer and Moderna administered with no reports of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis with thrombocytopenia.

Cdc Study Finds That The Pfizer Vaccine Is 93% Effective At Preventing Hospitalization For 12

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that 2 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine were 93% effective at preventing hospitalization in adolescents ages 12 to 18. The data included almost 500 adolescents and was collected between June and September 2021.

As of this week, almost 70% of people at least 12 years old are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in the U.S. The Pfizer vaccine is currently the only COVID-19 vaccine authorized for use in people younger than 18.

What this means: The Pfizer vaccine helps prevent hospitalization from COVID-19 in adolescents.

What this doesnt mean: The Moderna and J& J vaccines arent effective at preventing hospitalization. They might be, but theyre still being studied in this population. As of now, theyre only authorized for use in people at least 18 years old.

Which Symptoms To Look For

After COVID vaccination, patients should expect flu-like symptoms, a mild to moderate headache, fatigue, fever, muscle aches, Dr. Fryhofer said, noting that these symptoms are expected and usually resolve within one to two days.

There is also risk of a rare brain blood clot combined with low plateletscerebral venous sinus thrombosis with thrombocytopenia, or TTS. These adverse events were identified through the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, which is jointly managed by the CDC and FDA. The highest reporting rate is in 3039-year-old females within 21 days of vaccination and occurs at a rate of 10 cases per million doses administered.

The risk of this concerning combination of blood clots and low platelets is rare but serious, she said. Patients whove had the Janssen vaccine should seek immediate medical attention if they develop shortness of breath, chest pain, leg swelling, persistent abdominal pain, neurological symptoms including severe or persistent headache or blurred vision, or petechiae beyond the site of vaccination.

Patients with these symptoms should contact their physician and seek medical evaluation, Dr. Fryhofer added.

Patients should seek medical care if they develop weakness or tingling sensations in the legs or arms that worsens and spreads to other parts of the body. Other symptoms to be mindful of are difficulty with walking, facial movements and bladder control or bowel function as well as double vision or inability to move their eyes.

Vaccines Available Under Full Fda Approval Comirnaty Covid

  • Pfizer-BioNTech was fully approved by the FDA for people 16 years and older.
  • For full FDA approval, the FDA looked at data from more than 12,000 people who had been vaccinated to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine.
  • The FDA also reviewed safety data from 22,000 people who received the vaccine and 22,000 who received the placebo. These groups were also 16 years or older. Overall, about 12,000 people who received the vaccine were monitored for safety outcomes for at least 6 months.
  • The most common side effects were pain, redness and swelling at the injection site, fatigue, headache, muscle or joint pain, chills, and fever. The vaccine was found to be effective at preventing COVID-19 and potentially serious outcomes, such as hospitalization and death.

Moderna And Pfizer Vaccines Thought To Be Up To 86% Effective Against Hospitalization Caused By Covid

A different CDC report found that the Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines are effective against hospitalization caused by COVID-19. The report used data from March to July 2021 and concluded that 2 doses of either vaccine series helped prevent hospitalization over 80% of the time.

About 1,100 people were analyzed to collect this information. Up to 3 months after vaccination, the vaccines were seen to be about 86% effective. After that up to 6 months after vaccination the vaccines were about 84% effective.

These numbers reflect hospitalizations caused by the Delta variant and previous variants. But this study only analyzed hospitalized adults, and it didnt look at the specific effects of the J& J vaccine.

  • What this means: COVID-19 vaccination lowers the risk of hospitalization from infection.

  • What this doesnt mean: We dont know how effective the J& J vaccine is at preventing hospitalization. It wasnt included in this study, but its been studied elsewhere.
