The High Cost Of A Low Case Rate

More than 30 states report increases in coronavirus cases l ABC News

One factor that might account for the current low case rate is that COVID-19 has already touched many Floridians.

The state has seen more than 60,000 deaths from the coronavirus, the third-highest in the nation behind Texas and California.

It also had the third-highest total number of COVID-19 cases 3.6 million again behind Texas and California.

Florida also is among the top 10 states in per capita death rates from COVID-19, at 281 deaths per 100,000 people. Its rate is higher than Texas and California.

On the other hand, more restrictive Hawaii has the second-lowest death rate in the country, at just 67 per 100,000 people, higher than only Vermont.

Floridas warmer weather may help in that people are outdoors more to avoid spread, Parikh suggested. Also, Florida is less densely populated in certain areas, which also helps.

But much like comparing California and Florida, which took different approaches to pandemic mitigation but at one point had similar per capita case rates, there are probably too many variables to be able to clearly identify why different approaches between these states had similar results.

If youre only manipulating one variable, might tell you something, but where there are so many variables of whether youre masking or vaccinating or not, schools open or not, businesses requiring documentation of vaccines, or not I think its really hard to tell which of those variables is impactful, Cutler said.

Covid Cases Deaths Notably Worse In Red States Than Blue States: Report

U.S. states see record increases in COVID-19 cases

By the looks of it, Republican attacks on masks and COVID-19 vaccines dont seem to be particularly healthy for people living in red states. In several instances in recent months, both COVID-19 cases and deaths are notably higher in Republican states than in Democratic blue states, according to an analysis of data by The Washington Post.

The Post said the analysis reveals the inescapable overlap of pandemic and politics.

In a single, obvious example, of 54,000 people who have died since late June, in the latest wave of COVID-19, nearly 1 in 5 has died in Florida, where GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis battles against wearing masks. So a state with just 6% of the nations population accounts for 18% of the nations COVID-19 deaths this summer, the Post reported Friday.

But its far more than that. Across the nation, its obvious that theres an overlap of vaccination rates, party identity and pandemic outcomes that intertwines the discussion about the pandemic with partisan politics, noted reporter Philip Bump. We see that red states are doing much worse relative to the country on the whole than are blue states.

He added that more deaths from the virus occur in places where there are more cases. There are more cases in places where vaccination rates are lower. Vaccination rates are lower in places that voted more heavily Republican in 2020.

Of the 18 states that have new death totals higher than the national average, 14 voted for Trump, the Post reports.

Tracking New Coronavirus Cases In Hot Spots Across The United States

As U.S. authorities and medical personnel work to contain the coronavirus pandemic, the number of total cases is growing across the country at different rates. The factors are many, from when the disease first broke out in a place to the testing capabilities and the different stay-at-home orders in each state.

When thousands of cases were being confirmed daily in New York, the state was the epicenter of the nations crisis and on a different scale than the rest of the country. The virus has since spread across the country, with new hotspots emerging each month.

NBC News will update the data in these charts, which show the per-day count of confirmed cases in states that had spikes during the first wave of Covid in the U.S., daily. See the numbers on per-day coronavirus deaths in the U.S. and per state here.

And while New York and New Jersey’s Covid-19 outbreaks were the largest in the spring of 2020, several other states with high populations saw outbreaks as well. Note that cases in the U.S. are increasing due to improvements in testing capabilities as well as more people catching the disease.
