Has the delta variant put your travel plans at risk?

Beginning on Sept. 12, unvaccinated Delta employees will need to take a COVID-19 test every week, especially as COVID-19 cases surge amid the delta variants spread, according to CNBC.

  • The average hospital stay for COVID-19 has cost Delta $40,000 per person, Bastian said in a memo to employees, per CNBC. This surcharge will be necessary to address the financial risk the decision to not vaccinate is creating for our company. In recent weeks since the rise of the B.1.617.2 variant, all Delta employees who have been hospitalized with COVID were not fully vaccinated.

Whats The Risk Of Hanging Out With My Vaccinated Friends And Family

Vaccinated people are at very low risk when they spend time, unmasked, with their vaccinated friends and family members. I dont think mask-wearing is critical, Dr. Huffman said. If you are indoors with a small number of people you know are vaccinated, wearing a mask is low on my list of worries.

But some circumstances might require extra precautions. While its unusual for a vaccinated person to spread the virus to another vaccinated person, its theoretically possible. A vaccinated friend who is going to crowded bars, packed concerts or traveling to a Covid hot spot is a bigger risk than someone who avoids crowds and spends most of their time with vaccinated people.

With the Delta variant spreading, Dr. Bitton suggests an outdoor first strategy, particularly for families with unvaccinated children or family members at high risk. If you can take your event outside to a backyard or patio this summer and minimize your time indoors, you lower your risk.

The State of Vaccine Mandates in the U.S.

Spending time with smaller groups of vaccinated friends has less risk than attending a big party, even if you believe everyone at the party is vaccinated. If youre indoors, open the windows to improve ventilation. If someone in the group is at very high risk because of age or because they are immunocompromised, its reasonable to ask even vaccinated people to be tested before a visit. A simple rapid home test can even be offered to guests to be sure everyone is Covid-free.

    Do You Need To Be Vaccinated To Fly On Delta

    Bastian told CNBC on Tuesday that Delta does not plan to require proof of vaccination for travelers, especially because the coronavirus vaccines from Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson have not been fully approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

    • Its very difficult for us to come in and mandate a vaccine that isnt even federally approved yet, the authorization hasnt been final yet, he told CNBC. So stay tuned.

    Bastian said most Delta customers tend to be vaccinated anyway.

    • The vast majority of our customers are vaccinated, theyre in a clean environment, theyre fully masked, Bastian said. Our people, over 73% of our staff, are fully vaccinated and that number is growing by the day.

    More Companies Announcing COVID Vaccine Requirements As Delta Variant Spreads

    Earlier, White House coronavirus adviser Jeffrey Zients talked to the CEOs of American, Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines about vaccine mandates, according to three people familiar with the situation. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the calls were private.

    Airlines are large employers that fall under Biden’s sweeping order that companies with more than 100 workers require employees to be vaccinated or undergo weekly testing for the virus.

    Delta Will Charge Employees Who Refuse Covid

    By Pilar Wolfsteller2021-08-25T16:22:00+01:00

    Delta Air Lines will hike the health insurance premiums of employees who are not vaccinated against Covid-19 starting 1 November.

    In a memo to employees, the Atlanta-based carriers chief executive Ed Bastian says on 25 August that the airline will not require employees to be vaccinated against Covid-19, but new rules will apply to those who decline.

    Beginning Nov. 1, unvaccinated employees enrolled in Deltas account-based healthcare plan will be subject to a $200 monthly surcharge, Bastian writes. The average hospital stay for Covid-19 has cost Delta $50,000 per person. This surcharge will be necessary to address the financial risk the decision to not vaccinate is creating for our company.

    Delta will charge unvaccinated employees $200 per month from November

    In addition, unvaccinated employees will be required to wear face coverings in all indoor Delta settings as of immediately, and will be tested weekly from 12 September.

    Bastian adds that in the weeks since the more-virulent Delta variant has spread in the USA, all Delta employees who have been hospitalised with Covid were not fully vaccinated.

    About 75% of the companys staff are vaccinated,;and the airline administered 150,000 doses of the vaccine to employees, family members and friends at clinics across the USA in past weeks, Bastian adds.

    But, he adds, the only way out of the pandemic is if more people get the jabs.

    Covid 19 Delta Outbreak: Air Nz Will Require All International Passengers To Be Fully Vaccinated

    Air New Zealand will require all adult international passengers to be fully vaccinated from February 1 next year.

    People 18 and younger and those who cant take the vaccine for medical reasons will be exempt, Air NZ chief executive Greg Foran says.

    The airlines customer-facing staff need to be vaccinated, which includes about 75 per cent of all of its staff, he said.

    Foran told TVNZ the airline was still at a wait and see stage for whether domestic passengers will need to be fully vaccinated next year, but it was on the table.

    Staff and customers had told the airline that safety was paramount, he said.

    Increasingly we may be in a situation where people need to be vaccinated to get into particular events.

    He said it was exciting to hear about Australias plans to open up international travel.

    Foran said the current outbreak was a really difficult situation, which had hit Air NZ as well as other businesses but lockdowns were a matter for the Government.

    At a point next year were going to be getting these borders open and people are going to be able to travel overseas.

    Being vaccinated against Covid-19 is the new reality of international travel many of the destinations Kiwis want to visit are already closed to unvaccinated visitors. The quicker we get vaccinated, the sooner we can fly Kiwis to places like New York, Vancouver and Narita.

    Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced last week that the borders will open up in November.

    Delta Air Lines’ Vaccine Policy For Employees And Customers

    Deltas updated policy on COVID-19 vaccines applies to new hires, not current employees or passengers. In the Delta CEOs interview, he noted that those already employed by Delta Air Lines won’t be required to get vaccinated. However, the company urges all of its existing employees to get the vaccine.;

    Bastian also noted that about 60 percent of current Delta employees have already received at least one shot of the vaccine. He expects that up to about 80 percent of the employees will eventually be fully vaccinated. ;

    Though current employees can choose not to get the vaccine, the CEO pointed out that some restrictions might apply. For example, unvaccinated employees might not be able to work on international flights. ;

    The EEOC announced in December that companies could legally mandate vaccines for employees and new hires. The commission does have exceptions for people objecting due to disability or religious reasons, according to CNN.;

    Coronavirus News and Latest Updates on Reported Cases ...

    The C.D.C. has a color-coded map of Covid-19 outbreaks in the United States. Blue and yellow zones show relatively low levels of infections, while orange and red zones indicate areas where cases in the past week were above 50 cases per 100,000 people. The agency advises people to wear masks if they live in an orange or red zone which now accounts for about 80 percent of the counties in the United States.

    Infection numbers remain relatively low in much of the Northeast and Upper Midwest, while Delta has caused huge spikes in cases in Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and Florida.

    The problem with the map is that case counts are changing rapidly and may surge in your local community before the map has changed colors. Even if youre certain youre living in a highly vaccinated community with very low case counts, it makes sense to consider the case counts and vaccination rates in nearby communities as well, because people and viruses cross state and county boundaries all the time.

    Most experts agree that you dont need to wear a mask outdoors if youre not in a crowd and have plenty of distance from people whose vaccination status isnt known. Its still risky to attend a packed outdoor concert, but if you do, wear a mask.

    Have You Been Fully Vaccinated

    People are considered fully vaccinated*:

    • 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
    • 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnsons Janssen vaccine

    If you dont meet these requirements, you are NOT fully vaccinated. Keep taking all precautions;until you are fully vaccinated.

    If you have a condition or are taking medication that weakens your immune system, you may NOT be fully protected even if you are fully vaccinated. Talk to your healthcare provider. Even after vaccination, you may need to continue taking all precautions.

    • During Travel
    • Wearing a mask over your nose and mouth is required on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States and while indoors at U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations. Travelers are not required to wear a mask in outdoor areas of a conveyance .
    • Follow allstate and localrecommendations and requirements, including mask wearing and social distancing.
    • In areas with high numbers of COVID-19 cases, consider wearing a mask in crowded outdoor settings and for activities with close contact with others who are not fully vaccinated.
  • After Travel
  • Follow allstate and localrecommendations or requirements.
  • You do NOT need to get tested or self-quarantine if you are fully vaccinated or have recovered from COVID-19 in the past 3 months. You should still follow all other travel recommendations.

    Should I Upgrade My Mask

    You will get the most protection from a high-quality medical mask like an N95 or a KN95, although you want to be sure you have the real thing. A KF94 is a high-quality medical mask made in Korea, where counterfeits are less likely. If you dont have a medical mask, you still get strong protection from double masking with a simple surgical mask under a cloth mask. A mask with an exhale valve should never be worn, since it allows plumes of viral particles to escape, and counterfeit masks may have faulty valves that let germs in.

    You may want to pick your mask based on the setting. A cloth mask may be adequate for a quick trip into an empty convenience store in an area with high vaccination rates. But a higher-quality mask makes sense during air travel or in a crowded grocery store, especially in communities where vaccination rates are low and case counts are high. Masks with straps or ties around the back of the head seal more tightly than masks with ear loops.

    All the mitigation efforts we used before need to be better to hold off the Delta variant, and this includes masks, Dr. Huffman said. I strongly encourage people to upgrade their mask to something with high filter quality and something that fits tightly to their face. The No. 1 factor, in my opinion, is to make sure the mask is sealed well all around the edges over the nose bridge, by the cheeks and under the chin. So any mask that fits tightly is better than almost any loosefitting mask.

    The coronavirus pandemic is back in America. Just as many;feared, the Delta variant has proved to be extremely contagious, and cases are skyrocketing around the country up 171 percent nationally over the last two weeks, at time of writing.

    Worse, in many states well over half the population has not been vaccinated. In heavily-dosed states like Vermont and New Jersey, cases are up considerably, but hospitalizations much less so, because while the vaccines work less well against the Delta strain, they are still nearly 100-percent effective at preventing serious illness. But in conservative states full of Tucker Carlson-addled vaccine refuseniks, cases are skyrocketing and so are hospitalizations and mass deaths are on the way. “I’m admitting young healthy people to the hospital with very serious COVID infections,” one Alabama doctor . “One of the last things they do before they’re intubated is beg me for the vaccine. I hold their hand and tell them that I’m sorry, but it’s too late.”

    There is a simple and obvious solution to this problem: mandatory vaccination. Wherever possible, so long as people do not have a legitimate medical reason , they should be required to get their shot.

    There is also a long history of mandatory vaccination in the United States and other countries. Many states imposed smallpox vaccination requirements to stem outbreaks in the 19th century, and the Supreme Court eventually ruled in 1905 that doing so is constitutional.
